Apple iPad is here. Cheers.

28 Jan

Impressive? Yes. Revolutionary? Perhaps.

Worth the hype leading up to an exclusive dev/media event which is not broadcast live for public viewing? Certainly not.

Here’s why we think the Apple iPad just plain sucks.

Martin Jet Pack

25 Jan

If you’ve long wished of flying through the air or have simply seen Thunderball one too many times, perhaps it’s time to get in line for a Martin Jet Pack ($100,000; late 2010). Powered by a specially-designed 2.0L gasoline engine producing 200hp and capable of traveling as far as 31.5 miles or up to 8,000 feet, this unique personal aircraft falls under the FAA’s Ultralight classification — meaning no pilots license required — and even features a built-in ballistic parachute just in case you manage to run out of gas or stall in mid-air. Bluetooth helmet for playing Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” while flying not included.

The copter itself is computer-stabilized, so controlling it is much easier than the standard $40 toy RC helicopter you may be familiar with. But it should be: it’ll cost in the neighborhood of $500, when it ships this summer. You tilt your iPhone to steer the helicopter, with touch controls to adjust altitude. You’ll get about 15 minutes of battery-powered fun on a one-hour charge.

17 Jan

You’ll never absent mindedly leave your phone behind or let some jerk take your wallet again thanks to the iWallet. It connects to your phone via bluetooth and sounds an alarm whenever it’s more than 10 feet away from your phone. And if you’re enough of a tool to lose both your wallet AND your phone you can at least be grateful that no one can steal your identity from the hard case Kevlar or Carbon Fiber case that requires your thumb print to get in.

magnavox_bluray

Wal-Mart is offering the same $78 Magnavox MB500MG1F Blu-ray player on its Web site that was previously an in-store-only. There’s no front-panel LED display, and it definitely won’t do BD-Live, Netflix, or anything like that. Actually, there is one frill: an SDHC slot, meaning you can pop in the memory card from your camera for an onscreen photo slideshows. Its shipping will run you a measly 97 cents, though you’ll probably have to add sales tax as well.
